VEKA keeps recycling in the loop
With years of experience leading the industry in environmental initiatives, the VEKA Group is keen to reiterate that its commitment to recycling and sustainability is still ongoing and unrelenting. Managing Director of VEKA Recycling, Tony Cattini, discusses the many benefits of recycling PVC-U with this global organisation.
VEKA Umwelttechnik GmbH, has operated Europe’s most advanced PVC-U recycling plant in Germany for nearly 20 years. We were the very first in the industry to establish a closed-loop recycling facility of this kind, which can recycle 50,000 tonnes of PVC-U windows a year – all to a level of purity that can be made directly into new windows. However, the problem we have encountered time and time again, is a lack of understanding within the industry. Many people seem unaware of the high quality of these recycled products and very few fabricators and installers realise the ease with which they could benefit from this recycling programme.
VEKA Recycling is keen to promote recycled windows throughout the UK, in an effort to increase demand for these eco-friendly systems within the British market. Currently, our recycled products are quickly absorbed into the German Housing market, which is much more receptive to recycled material than the UK. All major British installation contracts are currently fitted with windows made of 100% new material, but we want to demonstrate that the quality of recycled products easily equals that of virgin polymer. This is the message that our Commercial Director Simon Scholes is working hard to spread among British fabricators and installers. Large scale industrial PVC-U recycling is just as viable here as it is in other countries such as Germany, we just need the industry to catch up and demonstrate the required demand.
VEKA Recycling was established in the UK in 2007 and allows fabricators and installers to improve their eco-friendly credentials. VEKA Recycling extends the lifespan of a window almost indefinitely and accepts all types of PVC-U frames regardless of their original manufacturer. We may have the VEKA name above the door, but we take material from all fabricators and profile users. VEKA Recycling offers an attractive alternative to landfill which is simple and convenient. We provide you with a bin into which any type of PVC-U can be thrown; old or new, complete with gaskets, handles and reinforcements but less the glass, then we simply collect it from your premises when it is full. Not only is this ethically and environmentally rewarding, it also makes good financial sense. It avoids the substantial cost of landfill while helping you attract greater numbers of customers with a ‘green conscience’.
The VEKA Recycling primary processing facility in Kent links major refurbishment sites all over the UK. It collects and collates material before processing it into a form that can be transported more fuel-efficiently to VEKA Umwelttechnik – avoiding the irony of wasting natural resources in order to save them. VEKA Recycling in the UK is only one part of a growing global commitment by VEKA Worldwide, which has already seen similar initiatives launched in a number of other countries. VEKA Recyclage in France has recently established a similar facility in Vendeuvre Sur Barse collating materials from France, Spain and Portugal for processing in Germany.
